The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) and the Provincial Directorate of Culture of Santiago de Cuba are calling documentary filmmakers from all over the world to the 21st Santiago Alvarez In Memoriam International Documentary Film Festival, to be held from March 1 to 8, 2024, in Santiago de Cuba.
In this upcoming edition, the Colombian documentary cinema is honored as the guest cinematography, presenting a wide selection of significant works from this fraternal country.
Inviting documentary filmmakers from around the world allows us to bring together multiple and diverse perspectives on our realities, to engage in a historical, social, and cultural reflection on the power of documentary cinema, and to establish a fruitful dialogue with our audiences. In a context where global media powers often impose simplifying and colonizing frameworks on reality, we call for documentary cinema that offers complexifying and emancipatory perspectives, documentaries with the ability to act as weapons in the struggle for the sovereignty of our peoples.
